Monopoli is an enchanting town nestled along the Adriatic Coast, in the southern region of Puglia. Like most cities in the heel of Italy, Monopoli is renowned for its rich history, which dates back to the first centuries…and then a few more.
Originally founded by the Greeks around 500 BC, the city was in the hands of many different civilizations, from the Romans to the Byzantines and Normans. Talk about history!
Monopoli boasts gorgeous architecture, medieval city walls and watchtowers, and a very scenic harbor. On top of it, it’s home to quaint cafés, bustling piazzas, and sandy beaches.
I was born and raised in northern Italy, but for a couple of weeks in the summer every year, I came to Puglia with my family, so I was able to get to know this part of the country very well. Monopoli is one of my favorite towns! Not as touristy as Alberobello or Polignano, it’s still relatively unknown and crowd-free.
In this article you’ll find the ultimate guide to visiting Monopoli, Puglia with all the tips from an Italian – you won’t find tourist traps on this guide! Ready? Let’s dive in.

HOW TO GET TO MONOPOLI
Having a rental car is a very convenient way to move around the Puglia region. The roads are in good condition, and it will make your journey to Monopoli incredibly easy.
The historic center of Monopoli is a ZTL (limited traffic zone), however, so you’ll need to park outside and walk there.
I usually use Discover Cars to compare prices and find the best deal. ➥ COMPARE PRICES HERE
Discover Cars is an online booking service that offers a wide range of rental options from various agencies in Cancun. This makes it easier to find a rental car that suits your budget and needs.
I particularly like their cancelation policy. With Discover Cars, you can typically cancel your booking for free up to 48 hours before pickup time – a much more generous cancelation policy than other platforms. It’s always important, however, to read the specific terms and conditions of your rental agreement. Policies can vary based on the rental company and the rate you choose.

BEST THINGS TO DO IN MONOPOLI
Walk Around the Historic Center
Monopoli’s Historic Center is an architectural gem. It’s a maze of narrow cobblestone streets lined with picturesque, whitewashed houses, medieval buildings, and quaint little balconies adorned with vibrant flowers.
This part of the city oozes history and character, with surprises around every corner. You’ll find beautifully preserved churches like the stunning Cattedrale Maria Santissima della Madia, known for its intricate baroque design.
The ancient city walls and watchtowers offer a glimpse into Monopoli’s strategic importance during the Middle Ages. As you explore, make sure to walk along the Lungomare, a scenic waterfront promenade perfect for soaking in the sea breeze and stunning Adriatic views.
Landmarks you can’t miss in the Centro Storico include Castello Carlo V, a 16th-century fortress that offers spectacular views and houses exhibitions; Porta Vecchia, the historic gateway to the old town; and Porto Antico, a charming old harbor that looks straight out of a postcard, especially when bathed in the warm glow of sunset.

Relax on the Beach
They say the best beaches in mainland Italy are in Puglia, along the Adriatic coast. And I don’t disagree. White sand shores, crystal-clear waters, and striking bluffs lining the coastline…the beaches in Puglia are gorgeous.
Monopoli might be one of the best-positioned towns, boasting 8 miles of shoreline. One of the best beaches is Cala Porta Vecchia, which is right in the historic center. It’s a very picturesque, typical Italian beach with the town acting as its backdrop.
Porto Bianco is a sandy beach with crystal-clear waters and a rocky outcrop, and Cala Cozze is a pretty pebble beach with tranquil water.
There’s a great number of other coves (calas) within walking distance of the city center. If you’d rather have access to facilities and loungers, Sabbiadoro Beach is the most popular one.
⚠️ However, if you want a local tip, the Southern area of Puglia has much better beaches, and that’s where us Italians go when looking for a beach vacation. I recommend combining the charming towns of Puglia with a few days of beach time in Salento.
Check Out the Photogenic Monopoli Old Port
The Porto Antico di Monopoli is the enchanting port of the city, which perfectly captures the essence of the region’s maritime endeavors. It’s the working fishing harbor of Monopoli, and if you take a stroll there early in the morning, you’ll see the fishermen hard at work with the day’s catch.
Though small, the port buzzes with life and it’s incredibly picturesque. You’ll see the traditional gozzo, Puglia’s red and blue boats, swaying gently on the shore, and the waterfront lined with cafés and restaurants where you can enjoy breakfast or a seafood specialty.
Explore Castello Carlo V
One of the most famous landmarks in Monopoli is the 16th-century Castello Carlo V. It’s named after Charles V of Spain, who commissioned its construction for protection.
The sturdy structure, strategically located by the port, was a defensive bastion against pirates and foreign invaders.
It features ramparts, solid walls, interesting chambers, and a former jail. That’s besides the advantageous view over the shimmering sea!
Today, the castle serves as a cultural center and venue for various events. If you don’t feel like going in, it’s still very much worth it to walk around it.
Opening Hours: Tuesday to Sunday from 10 AM to 1 PM and from 5 PM to 9 PM.
Visit the Monopoli Cathedral + Museo Cripta Romana
The Monopoli Cathedral, also known as Basilica of the Madonna della Madia, is a striking example of Puglia’s Romanesque architecture – even if it was completed in Baroque style six centuries later!
It features an incredible facade adorned with intricate sculptures and an even more beautiful interior.
In 1117, a so-called miracle occurred when a raft carrying an icon of the Madonna drifted into the harbor. The raft was used to finish the roof, and the Madonna inspired the Cathedral’s name.
Adjacent to the cathedral lies the Museo Cripta Romana, which showcases ancient Roman artifacts and the remains of a Roman villa.
Opening Hours: Daily from 8 AM to 8.30 PM.
Explore the Area on a Bike Tour
Explore the historic center of Monopoli, and head into the surrounding countryside, on a bike. You’ll cover much more ground than on foot, and learn about the stunning region while zipping through olive groves, and country roads.

Did you know that Puglia is one of the most renowned regions when it comes to food? Its authentic cuisine, combined with the all-time beloved Italian classics, makes it a foodie paradise.
And as an Apulian town, Monopoli doesn’t disappoint. There are countless trattorias serving delicious, hearty dishes bound to make your mouth water.

Join a Cooking Class
How about learning the secrets behind your favorite Apulian dishes? While I adore eating my way through cities, there’s something special about hands-on cooking classes.

Enjoy a Stroll Along the Lungomare (with Gelato!)
There’s a lovely spot to get authentic gelato by the old harbor, called Bella Blu Gelateria. Get your sweet treat in a cone, and head for a stroll along the Lungomare, Monopoli’s promenade.
It stretches from Porto Antico to Porto Rosso, and offers glorious views of the Adriatic Sea, while passing by numerous city landmarks, such as Castello Carlo V and the old city walls.
You’ll also pass by restaurants, food stalls, and playgrounds. It’s one of the most relaxing things to do when visiting Monopoli – at any time of day!
Sip an Espresso in Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi
Umm…what’s more quintessentially Italian than sitting in a piazza for a coffee break and people-watching? Few things, let me tell you.
Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi is in the bustling heart of the old town. It’s a charming square lined with cafés and bars, and makes for the perfect spot to take a break from your explorations.
Pop by one of the local restaurants to get your coffee order (or aperitivo, why not?) and sit down on the square to take in the sights and sounds.
Embark on a Wine Tour
The area of Salento, which covers the southern section of Puglia, is particularly renowned for its wine production. Bold reds, crisp whites, and rosés are produced in the region, where the main grapes cultivated are Primitivo, Negroamaro, and Malvasia Nera.
Located right on the edge of Salento, Monopoli benefits from these spectacular varietals, and is home to quite a few wineries and enotecas where you can enjoy high-quality tastings.
You can book a tasting or winery tour on your own, or join a tour like this one.
▶️ This Natural Wine Tasting (3 Labels) is a 45-minute experience that takes place in a historical Apulian Masseria. A professional sommelier will introduce you to the world of natural wines, from their production to the taste, and you’ll sample three varieties. ➥ BOOK IT HERE
I’ve written a whole post about wine tours in Puglia if you’d like more information.
Take Part in an Olive Oil Tasting
Usually, where there is wine there’s olive oil. And that’s because the appropriate climate and soil fertility that nurtures vines is also the one needed by olive groves.
Not only that, but the olive trees act as shelters for the grape vines against strong winds. So while you’re at it, why not participate in an olive oil tasting as well?
▶️ This Private Oil Tasting Experience in Monopoli takes you on a journey through the flavors of Apulian olive oil, as you learn all about the local production from an expert. You’ll sample seven types of extra-virgin olive oil, and get advice on how to use each of them in the kitchen. ➥ BOOK IT HERE
