A Long Weekend in Slovenia at Big Berry Camp

Located by Kolpa River in Primostek, Big Berry Camp is Slovenia’s first lifestyle camp. When Big Berry invited us to go and experience the newly-opened camp, we said: “Of course!”, and we definitely didn’t regret it.

This is a glamping site that blends luxury and an in-touch-with-nature experience. We loved our stay, Big Berry Camp was the perfect place to spend our Slovenia holidays, take a break from the hectic, everyday life in the city, and finally relax and find time for our couple.

And if you’ve got more time, you can definitely add a couple of days here to an itinerary that also includes the Alps and Lake Bled – this is one of the best Balkan road trips in fact.

Guests stay in designer mobile homes with all the comforts of a hotel. There are 7 mobile homes at the moment, but more are being built and will be ready next summer when the camp opens to the public.

The homes feature all you might need during your stay. Lorenzo and I stayed in a 6-person house with a double bedroom and a second room with bunk beds.

The kitchen and living room are fully equipped with a big refrigerator, a microwave oven, a couch, and a big 40″ LED TV… not that you need a television in such a place.

In the bathroom, you’ll find berrylicious shower gels and body lotions by Alpstories.

However, our favorite feature in the home was our personal Jacuzzi hot tub on the private patio. We asked Peter in the morning to fill it with water and switch it on so it would be ready at night time. We relaxed so much that night that we had to repeat the experience the next day!

The girls at the reception even gave us a bottle of wine from the local producer we had just met. Can you think of a better way to end the night?

I’m a big fan of picnics, so imagine my joy in discovering that breakfast at Big Berry is not like your usual one. Every morning a breakfast basket is delivered to your patio so you can get up and have breakfast in your pjs while breathing the fresh morning air.

The basket contains fresh bread, milk, yogurt, butter, jam, honey, fruit juices, and more, and it’s great to know that all the products come from local producers who partnered up with Big Berry Camp.

Big Berry Camp Is Perfect To Explore the Bela Krajina Region

The camp is located right by the river so you can wake up with some great views (and ask your boyfriend to take some pretty pictures of you hehe). Not bad, uh?

What I like about the camp is that you can easily do as much as you want… or do nothing at all. You can kayak and swim in Kolpa River when the weather is nice, participate in fitness/yoga classes, and relax in the hanging baskets.

On Sunday for lunch, we had a barbecue in the newly-built barbecue house. Something tells me the guys will use it a lot in the future!

Big Berry Camp can be imagined both as a destination itself for a long weekend escape (as we did) or as part of longer holidays in Slovenia and Croatia. Either way, there’s a lot to explore in the Bela Krajina region and the rest of Slovenia.

Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t at its best during our stay and we didn’t get to visit Slovenia’s most famous attractions such as Postojna Cave and Bled Lake, but our days were filled with interesting activities nonetheless (more on that later!)

Local people were always smiley and eager to tell us what makes their region so special.

A special word about the staff. The staff at the camp is cheerful and fun and we felt immediately treated as friends. None of the guys is over 30 and the staff is multicultural, with people coming from Croatia, Spain, Vietnam, Russia… quite a special team.

We only had 4 days at Big Berry because Lorenzo had to go back to work, but we definitely wouldn’t have minded staying longer. There was a lot we didn’t have time to explore… next time!

We were guests of Big Berry Camp, but the information you find here is truthful and comes from our personal experience.

The closest airport to Big Berry Camp is Zagreb airport in Croatia, which is about 1 hour and a half away, but transportation can also be arranged from Ljubljana airport (2 hours away). The camp will open its doors to the public in spring 2017. Rates for a mobile home which sleeps six people average 200 euros a night (breakfast and activities are included).[/dropshadowbox]
