Bacalar is a small town known for its breathtaking lagoon, often referred to as the Lake of Seven Colors.
I had heard friends talking about the Bacalar Lagoon since 2017 or so, yet I never added this destination to my itinerary till my last visit. Big mistake! Bacalar quickly became one of my favorite destinations in all of Mexico. The color of the water is unreal!
How to explore this destination? Well, unless you have a car, you’ll most likely want to join a tour. And even if you do, I still highly recommend a sailing trip through the lagoon – it’s affordable and, in my opinion, the very best way to explore Bacalar.
The range of tour options available in Bacalar is wide. There are tours within Bacalar in which visitors can explore the lagoon and swim in its crystal-clear waters. You can even visit nearby attractions like the Cenote Negro or the Pirate Canal.
Additionally, some tours depart from other popular tourist destinations in the region. You can start your day trip in Cancun, Tulum, Playa del Carmen, or other towns along the Yucatan Peninsula. These tours often include transportation, a professional guide to explore the area with, and meals.
➥ Why can you trust my picks? The six months I spent in Mexico and ten years in the travel industry have taught me what makes a tour unforgettable. These Bacalar tours are my top choices, chosen for their engaging itineraries, expert guides, and a focus on sustainable practices. Plus, you’ll find the tour I personally went on!
I generally use Viator and Get Your Guide to book tours around the world. I especially recommend them for their great cancellation policy. If your travel plans change, you can cancel most activities up to 24 hours in advance and get a full refund.

OUR PICK: The BEST Bacalar Tour
Sail across Mexico’s very own Maldives with the Sailing Tour through the Laguna de los Siete Colores. This is the tour that Fran and I joined and that we 100% loved and recommend!
This tour is the perfect way to relax and soak up the sun while exploring Bacalar and its crystal-clear water. I have only seen water this color in the Maldives and in a couple of Caribbean Islands – you have to see it with your own eyes to believe it!
The half-day trip starts at the dock in Bacalar where you’ll board the boat. The first stop is Cenote Negro (also known as Cenote de la Bruja).
You’ll then head to the Pirates’ Channel, where you’ll stop for a first swim (or just sunbathe on the boat). These two pictures were taken exactly at this stop.
A delicious plate of seasonal fruits, water, and beer will be served on board as you sail to the last stop: Bird Island (Isla de Los Pajaros is the original name in Spanish). I know it seems impossible and you’ll probably think I’ve photoshopped this image, but the water here truly looks like this.
You’ll stop here long enough to enjoy another swim before heading back to the town. This tour is offered twice a day (once in the morning and once in the afternoon) so ou can choose whatever time is best for you.
➤ Why is this the best tour? Besides boasting over a thousand 5-star reviews (one of which is mine!) the tour offers you the best way to see and experience Bacalar: from the water.
With two tours a day, its schedule is flexible enough to suit yours, it provides snacks and drinks so you want for nothing, and guarantees personalized attention from your guide. Plus, it’s really affordable compared to any boat tour in the Riviera Maya!
It’s not just me saying it! Read what the reviews say:
“Wonderful tour. Leandro and Cecil were friendly and laidback, ensuring we were comfortable and had fun. It was a great group size. The two swimming stops were a good duration, and the lagoon is a pleasure to swim in! Sitting at the front of the boat at sunset, and having the cold fruit platter and beers were definitely a highlight. Definitely recommend experiencing the lagoon this way. Muchas gracias!”
