Wyndham Alltra Playa del Carmen: An HONEST Review [2024]

Wyndham Alltra Playa del Carmen is an Adults Only All Inclusive Resort with luxurious amenities. It has plenty of entertainment options for grown-ups as well as relaxation activities, making it the best place to be fully rested and worry-free.

THE ALL INCLUSIVE CONCEPT

The Playa del Carmen All Inclusive Resort includes all food and drinks, as well as a 24-hour room service that enables you to have breakfast in bed, or a late-night treat on the terrace.

There’s no need to ever pay for dinner in town or go out for a snack if you don’t want to! 

There’s also nightly live entertainment, swimming pools overlooking the ocean with waiters securing your drinks, and the chance to enjoy themed dinner nights or cooking classes.  

I can honestly say that the service at Wyndham Alltra Playa del Carmen is exceptional, probably the best we ever experienced in a resort/hotel in this part of the world.

Formerly known as Panama Jack Resort Playa del Carmen, the resort is under the Alltra brand. This is a new upper-midscale segment brand by Wyndham which was opened recently.

It has only a handful of hotels, the first ones being this one and the Wyndham Alltra Cancun, which we also visited on our last trip to Mexico.

THE LOCATION

The location of Wyndham Alltra Playa del Carmen is ideal, being mere steps from the beach but also a block away from Quinta Avenida. This is Playa del Carmen’s main avenue and home to tons of restaurants, shops, and attractions.

THE FACILITIES

Being one of the best All Inclusive Resorts in Playa del Carmen, Wyndham Alltra features an impressive oceanfront, freshwater swimming pool with a bar right by it.

You can either get your drinks or have them delivered by the waiters as you relax in the comfortable pool cabanas or work on your tan on the sun loungers.

The use of pool loungers and umbrellas is complimentary for all guests, but for the perfect pool day consider booking a pool cabana.

Pool cabanas cost 70-100 USD per day at the time of writing and come with a bottle of sparkling wine and drink service. I personally think it’s worth it if you plan on spending the whole day at the pool!

And at night, the pool becomes even more magical…

You’ll also find a second swimming pool and hot tub on the rooftop. Come here if you want to escape the crowds. You can also have a drink and a sushi roll at the adjacent Off the Hook sushi bar.

The resort is home to a fully-equipped fitness center and a spa that offers several treatments. Plus, there are 6 restaurants and 5 bars & lounges, as well as venues to celebrate special events and wedding packages.

THE BEACH

Unfortunately, a couple of years ago a hurricane has eaten a good part of the beach of Alltra Wyndham Playa del Carmen and surrounding resorts. However, a stretch of the beach remains towards the end of the resort.

Here, guests can find sun loungers and umbrellas, as well as Las Olas bar that makes cocktails and serves other types of drinks. Beach cabanas are also for rent, for the same cost as a pool cabana.

Unfortunately, when we visited, the beach was covered in sargassum, a type of seaweed that has become a big issue over the last few years. This is a result of climate change and in no way the fault of the hotel.

In fact, all beach hotels in the region have the same issue. The only places in Quintana Roo where seaweed doesn’t arrive are Isla Mujeres, Cancun, and some parts of Cozumel.

The seaweed arrives between May-June and stays until September-October, so keep this in mind when deciding when to book your trip to Playa del Carmen.

THE ROOMS

Wyndham Playa del Carmen, Mexico boasts 287 rooms divided into 4 different categories: the Standard Room, the Junior Suite, the Master Suite, and the Master Premium Suite.  

The Standard Room accommodates 4 people, featuring 2 double beds, an en-suite bathroom with toiletries, and a semi-private terrace with dining furniture.  

The Junior Suite can be booked with full or partial ocean views, with beachfront walk-out, or city views. They accommodate up to 4 people in king-sized beds, and have a private balcony with furniture and floor-to-ceiling windows. The rooms with beach access include the use of an exclusive beach cabana. 

We stayed in an Oceanview Junior Suite and it was the perfect amount of space for us. We loved having two balconies (although unfortunately, we couldn’t make much use of them since it was so windy all the time).

The Master Suite is an oceanfront 1,020 square feet room featuring a private balcony with outdoor furniture, floor-to-ceiling windows, a seating area, and a spacious bedroom with a king-sized bed.

The Premium Suite is the biggest one and has balconies off the bedroom and the seating area, two bathrooms, and well-lit, ample rooms. Both suites accommodate 4  people and include an exclusive beach cabana.

THE FOOD

Off The Hook

This rooftop sushi bar serves a wide variety of sushi rolls that can be enjoyed by the pool and with a cool drink. Weather permitting, it opens from 11 AM to 6 PM, so it’s a perfect spot for lunch or to satiate a mid-afternoon sushi craving. 

This is not your typical so-and-so resort sushi – it’s actually really good quality sushi! You can also ask for sashimi.

Bella

Bella is an Italian restaurant that serves traditional dishes and will satisfy both seafood and meat lovers. As well as those hungry for a good plate of Italian pasta, of course. The restaurant is open daily for dinner from 5 PM to 10 PM. 

As an Italian, I’m always wary of Italian restaurants abroad. Even more so since I haven’t been back to Italy in two years, and I so crave real Italian food. But I was so pleasantly surprised by this restaurant!

The food was so good, and the service very attentive – we could have easily been at a restaurant in Italy. I highly recommend the ravioli and the appetizers.

Zarape

Zarape is a colorful and vibrant Mexican restaurant that offers traditional Mexican dishes – anything from guacamole, margaritas, tacos and more.

Definitely try their tostadas, and if you like meat order the “molcajete”, a traditional dish with different types of meats and veggies. Zarape is open from 5 PM to 10 PM.

Brasas

For grilled meats and other specialties, Brasas stands out. It gives a modern twist to traditional Mexican dishes that are served directly from the grill to the plate. Open from 6 PM to 10 PM, it’s a perfect spot for dinner on the resort’s ground floor. 

Ventanas

Ventanas is the buffet restaurant where you’ll have most of your breakfast and lunches. The buffet offers a variety of different cuisines – Mexican, grilled corner, sushi, Italian, etc.

The variety and quality are really good for being a buffet. We especially loved the breakfast here. So many dishes to try, and they have the most amazing juice bar with 10+ different types of juices and smoothies.

And if you want something special, they can custom-make your juice too!

Cafe Mexico

This coffee bar will refill your coffee cup all day long, whether it’s your black coffee daily dose or a sophisticated brew. You can enjoy your drink by the bar, pool, or in a comfy cabana with a book. I loved that they also served dairy-free options – my favorite? An oat milk caramel macchiato!

La Pizzeria & Quick Delights

Looking for a quick snack or lunch? Right by the pool, you can find La Pizzeria which, as the name suggests, is a pizza corner that offers multiple types of fresh pizza.

Another option is the Quick Delights lounge where you can grab soft drinks, sandwiches, sushi, fruit, and a few more healthy options. This place is open 24/7, just in case you get hungry in the middle of the night or after a night out!

Las Olas Bar

Las Olas is a beach bar serving drinks, creative cocktails, and margaritas all day long. Sip your favorites at the beach, in between swims, or as you relax by the sea.  

Kaa Bar & Lounge

In the hotel’s lobby, you’ll also find a lively bar with live music and all-day drinks served from 11 AM to midnight. Whether you’re looking for a breakfast mimosa, an afternoon cocktail, or an aperitivo, you’ll find it at Kaa Bar. 

ACTIVITIES

There are plenty of activities to be enjoyed at Wyndham Alltra All Inclusive in Playa del Carmen. You can exercise with a personal trainer or join a yoga class to begin your day energized.

Or how about taking advantage of the water activities offered that include aqua aerobics and kayaking?

We went to a yoga class first thing in the morning on our second day. It was Fran’s very first time doing yoga and he loved it! The class is for everyone, from beginners to more advanced yogis – all the exercises can be tailored to your fitness level.

Games and evening live entertainment are a staple at this Playa del Carmen all Inclusive resort. So are local excursions to discover the best of Playa del Carmen and its surroundings. 

Unfortunately, the outdoor shows were canceled during our stay because of bad weather, but they made up for them with indoor shows like the circus and a jazz player.

We also took part in a couple of day activities such as a guacamole-making competition and a juicing class.

THE SPA

Aura Spa is where you can get body wraps and scrubs, massages, and beauty treatments. You can also enjoy its hydrotherapy circuit that includes a sauna, outdoor tub, and steam bath. It’s meant to help you rejuvenate and detoxify your body.

Prenatal massages, reflexology, and couples’ experiences are also part of the spa menu. Whenever you book a treatment or massage, you get complimentary use of the hydrotherapy area for two days.

Otherwise, you can pay a small amount and get access to the hydrotherapy area for your whole stay. It’s the perfect activity for a rainy day!
